The Jeep Wrangler YJ was introduced in 1987. In 1988 some minor changes were made including the way the upper half doors attached to the lower half doors. Little changed for Jeep Wrangler YJ parts in model years 1989 and 1990. Starting in 1991, the 4.2 liter in-line 6 cylinder engine was upgraded to the fuel injected 4.0 Liter High Output engine which remained in Jeep Wranglers for the next 15 years. In 1992, the classic roll bar was changed to the more elaborate cage which provided the Jeep Wrangler YJ rear passengers with greater protection. With the exception of minor interior and trim details, Jeep Wrangler YJ parts remained unchanged in model years 1993, 1994 and its final production year 1995.

The Wrangler YJ, introduced in 1987, was built as a replacement for the Jeep CJ. The Wrangler YJ was designed with a leaf spring suspension and a wider wheelbase. Unlike the CJ with its round headlights, the Wrangler YJ has rectangular headlights. Three different engine types were available on the Jeep YJ: a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4, an optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 and a fuel injected 4.0 L AMC 242.

Throughout its manufacturing life, seven different trim packages were available on the Wrangler YJ including the Base model, Laredo, Islander, Sport, Sahara, Renegade and Rio Grande. The AX-5 and AX-15 transmissions and the reverse cut Dana 30 front axle and Dana 35 rear axle were also features of the Wrangler YJ. The Wrangler YJ saw a grand total of 685,071 vehicles built.
