The Jeep Grand Cherokee made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan in 1992. The Grand Cherokee ZJ as it was known was built from 1993 to 1998. Three trim packages were available; Base, Laredo and Limited. All three trims included a driver’s side airbag and anti-lock brakes. Engine options included a 4.0L 190hp V6 and a 5.2L 220hp V8.
Three four-wheel-drive systems were offered on Grand Cherokee. Command-Trac was a part-time 4-wheel drive; Selec-Trac was a full-time or part-time 4-wheel drive and Quadra-Trac, a strictly full-time 4-whhel drive.
In 1999 the Grand Cherokee was redesigned and the WJ model was born. With a 4.7 L PowerTech V8 engine and the manual transmission replaced with either a 4 or 5 speed automatic, the Grand Cherokee WJ was a was lighter vehicle that got much better fuel economy.
In 2005, Jeep unveiled the Grand Cherokee WK. Features available for the first time in a Jeep included Quadra-Drive II four-wheel drive, rear-seat DVD player and optional 5.7L Hemi V-8.
